This course is designed for health care professionals (physicians, nurses, EMS personnel, etc.) who are renewing their ACLS Provider status. This course is designed with the experienced provider in mind and is recommended for those who are actively involved in cardiac arrest resuscitation codes. Part 1: Complete online portion by purchasing a key from the UW Medicine Community Training Center at Harborview Medical Center.  This course teaches:

  • Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicated resuscitation outcomes.
  • Management of cardiac arrest until return of spontaneous circulation, termination of resuscitation, or transfer of care.
  • Recognition of life threatening clinical situations such as stroke.
  • Identification and treatment of ischemic chest pain and expedition of the care of patients with acute coronary syndromes.
  • Effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and how to recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.
  • Basic life support care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating an AED.

Course can be completed in approximately six hours and includes a written exam. Part 2: After completion of the online portion, the student should email their online certificate of completion to hmcctc@uw.edu with request to schedule completion of the skills testing portion. Students must complete a testing session by an AHA ACLS Instructor that includes successful management of a Megacode, one & 2-rescuer CPR, AED use, mouth-to-mask and bag-mask ventilation (OPA & NPA included) to earn their AHA ACLS provider card.

Participants will be assigned a two-hour practice/testing session.

BLS New or Renewal

This universal course is designed to meet the Basic Life Support (CPR) certification requirements for both the new and the renewing health care providers. Certification is required for anyone who intends to enter a clinical program of study or work in a medical or patient care setting.

 Curriculum

  • CPR skills for victims of all ages
  • Ventilation with a mouth-to-mask barrier device and bag-mask device
  • Use of AED ( automated external defibrillator)
  • Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO) for adults, children and infants
  • Current AHA guidelines

  • 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm on varying week days

BLS Online (Heartcode, Part I)

For healthcare providers seeking first-time training or renewal of their BLS card. Part 1: Completed online through a key (code) issued from the HMC Community Training Center. Through interactive scenarios, this course teaches:

  • One- and two-rescuer CPR (adult, child, infant)
  • AED use
  • Bag-mask use
  • Rescue breathing and choking (adult, child infant)
  • Please Note: Online course completion certificate must be emailed to hmcctc@uw.edu prior to scheduling in order to participate in the skills practice/testing session.

  • Provider eCards will be issued upon successful completion of course.
  •  Course can be completed in approximately 1.5 three hours.
  • Part 2: After completion of the online portion, contact the UW Medicine Community Training Center at Harborview to schedule a skills practice/testing session. Participants must complete a skills practice/testing session with an AHA BLS Instructor to earn their AHA Heartsaver CPR AED Provider card. Online certificate of completion must be emailed to hmcctc@uw.edu prior to scheduling a practice/testing session. Skills practice/testing session should be completed within 60 days after completion of Part I (online portion).
